Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a portrait take to complete?

Varies by season, schedule, content, size, hard to say ...one day, weeks, but I'll have an idea any given time of the year.

Can you paint more than one person in one portrait from separate photos?

Answer: Yes, in "montage" style unless otherwise. Will discuss in details at your request.

Will you frame my artwork?

Answer: Framework is included, client providing the frame.

What size should the painting be?

Answer: The art will display on a wall. How much space do you want dedicated? Some art pieces look great with small borders, others with more square-inch area than the piece itself.

What is acid-free paper?

Answer: Acid-free is treated paper to prevent yellowing or bleeding over time. To give you an idea, newspapers are not acid free. All my materials are acid-free including the mat and backboard.

What's the difference between Acrylic and Oil paints?

Answer: Acrylics are water-based so they dry within minutes after dispensing from the tube, less messy and an easy clean up. Takes time to master blending color and applying before it dries. Those colors are strong and powerful. Oils require chemicals, can be messy (ruin good clothes) but are excellent to blend and mix, paint modern or mid century style. I choose both.

What are prisma pencils?

Pastels in a pencil form, powerful colors, easy to blend, easy to erase but pricy, over a buck each or cheaper by the set. I use black mat board for it's thickness to sustain several erases. If you erase too much on thinner paper, the surface will tear and need to start over. What client wants a tear on the surface?

Do you paint live portraits?

Answer: I don't have the interest at the moment.

Do you paint nudes?

Answer: Yes, have painted several over the years. These are meant to be private and is why I only posted a couple cleaner samples on my site.

You painted a portrait of my girlfriend and I, she took her anger out on the portrait. Can you repair it?

Answer: Find a new girlfriend.

I want a painting for my wife but don't have a clue on what style.

Answer: Take a look around the house and see what type of artwork she's currently displaying. Floral, colonial, modern, western, wildlife, landscapes, colors, tropical, sharp or abstract, colorful or faded, sizes, framed/unframed, matted, etc?

Photography - You shoot digital or film?

Answer: Both. However, film cost can make your decision as developing is very expensive and is why I mostly shoot digital to keep pricing down. Today we have the option of printing digital images on genuine photo paper.

My loved one is a perfectionist. Do you have a perfect answer?

Answer: Yes. Gift Certificates.

My son is interested in the art world, where do we start?

Answer: Start at home by encouragement, appreciate the work and many pats on the back. Take him to book stores, libraries, galleries, craft fairs, art shows, museums for him to explorer and develop his own interests and painting styles. Make it fun. We kids like fun!

Can anyone learn to paint or draw?

Answer: Of course! Pursue it further, jump into to it and see what it's all about. If you still like it, in time, you'll develop your own styles and choose your own materials like your preferred brushes.

What colors do you mix for skin tone?

Answer: For oils, I use burnt sienna, brown, white, cadnium red, yellow ocre, maybe a little bit of this or a little bit of that. I prepare between 5 to10 shades prior to painting so I don't have to mix during a job (unless it's acrylic).
